Four Eyes

...The art of seeing clearly...

The Day I Thought My Life Had Ended…

The eye doctor’s office was downtown, not far from the office where my mother worked at the time.  I had gotten an eye exam, ordered the glasses, then went to pick them up.  You remember glasses in the ‘60s, don’t you?  Let’s just say they weren’t exactly a fashion statement. And at age 15, I took it pretty hard.  When I put them on my face, my whole future evaporated right before the four eyes staring back at me from the mirror.  I tried not to show my devastation to the doctor-he was doing his best.

I walked out of his office with the weight of a thousand worlds on my shoulders.  I was certain everyone I passed stared at the teenager in the thick black frames, wondering how her parents could possibly let this happen to her.  I was wondering the same thing!  And, the next day at school didn’t bear thinking about . . . I actually contemplated the possibility of becoming a 15 year old drop out— that very day.

However, as I walked down the sidewalk to meet my mother at her office for a ride home, I noticed an amazing thing.

I’m short!

For the first time in my life, I saw how near to the ground my head is.  And when I looked up, I could clearly see words on billboards & buildings. Each leaf on each tree was clearly visible.  My world wasn’t fuzzy anymore.

The same thing happened the day I began walking with Jesus.

Once I grasped His hand, my spiritual world wasn’t fuzzy anymore.  I realized (and am still realizing) how small I am.  God is so much bigger.  My spiritual vision–unlike my physical eyes–became clearer as I spent more time in His Word.

The harshness of life takes on a fuzzy outline sometimes.  But when I hold it up to the powerful lens of Scripture, it takes on a new shape.  God helps me see life’s tragedies for what they are—His means of shaping me to look like Him.

So, being a four-eyes isn’t so bad . . . as long as two of those eyes are looking through God’s glasses.

  1. Seeing through God’s lens makes all the difference.

    Wonderful analogy, Deb!

Great post, Deb. I went through the same “trauma” in 7th grade. And, yes the glasses had thick black frames. And I remember on the ride home from the ophthalmologist’s office looking at the road signs and realizing that I could now see them clearly. I was blind, but now I could see. (John 9:25).

We definitely need to look at everything through the lens of scripture.

      Hi Steve!

That day when I was 15, I remember thinking that I might as well just enlist, since I was now wearing the official eye wear! Another example of my under-developed brain at that point in my life. Thank goodness I grew up . . . sort of! 🙂

      Have a good one!
